Organic coconut oil, delicious oils, lecithin granules and pumpkin seed butter are all available. We’ll be adding more soon, including healthy protein powders and some delicious gluten free breads so watch this space. You will have to log in to search. Recent posts have mentioned the reasons for avoiding mercury, the heavy metal which finds it’s way into our bodies from food (especially fish), water (it’s been found in tap water) and silver fillings. This video from the University of Calgary shows you exactly what damage the mercury does to our brain cells (neurons). It’s full of the science, but all presented in a simple way

If you are concerned about mercury toxicity then the Nutritional Therapy process will be able to identify if it is a potential problem to an individual. Laboratory tests can identify levels and a detoxification programme can be introduce.

Detox in the Dordogne

Take some time out to detox, cleanse and rejuvenate in a beautiful country house in the Dordogne region of France next month. Jiva Healing are running two week long fasting retreats, from 19th June to 3rd July. Week one is already booked, but there are still a couple of spaces for week two.

At Jiva, the emphasis is on empowering clients to embrace a healthier way of life as well as the fast itself. So there are classes on nutrition and healthy eating and I will also be offering tailored nutritional therapy consultations and Oxidata free-radical testing during the retreat.

Breaking the fast is as important, if not more important than the fast itself and to help clients I’ll also be preparing meal plans for when they get home, making it even easier to use a Jiva fasting retreat as the kick start to a new healthier way of being.

Plastic for lunch anyone?

Check out this video from the Plastiki expedition, they are sailing across the Pacific in a boat made of plastic objects to publicise the accumulation of waste plastic in the oceans. There is a huge health as well as environmental implication to this as the plastic debris in the ocean enters the food chain. There is now pretty strong evidence that Earth’s oceans have been contaminated on a global scale with bisphenol A (BPA). BPA disrupts hormones, has been linked to heart disease and may cause abnormalities if there is exposure to a growing fetus.

Support the Plastiki project here and most importantly, reduce your own use of plastics.

No More Bloating

I have had bloating and digestion problems for years and have tried various things to eliminate it including diet changes and other ‘alternative’ treatments or cleanses. These provided temporary relief but the bloating problems along with eczema/psoriasis always sneaked back! Angela helped to find the root cause of the problem through holistic treatment and some detailed ‘sample’ testing. Thanks to Angela and her fantastic advice and support, I have beaten off some nasty bugs, changed my attitude towards certain foods in my diet and have adopted a healthier lifestyle which I hope remains a permanent fixture. Bloating and digestive issues are a common complaint from clients. While dietary changes will usually help, there can be underlying factors involved. In this case we identified low stomach acid and the presence of undesirable bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). If stomach acid is low then digestion of the food we eat is inhibited and the partially digested food will lead to bloating. So while diet changes had helped Sharon in the past, it was only when we addressed the poor digestion by eradicating H pylori and re-establishing optimal stomach acid that we were able to properly resolve bloating issues.

Quickest, Easiest, Healthiest meal of the week

Mackerel & Avocado pate: It really doesn’t get any quicker or easier: (enough for one, but make more and keep in the fridge)

• fillet of smoked or grilled mackerel

• half an avocado

• dash of good olive oil

•tablespoon of fresh grated horseradish root (you can use horseradish sauce, or if none available, just double the miso paste below)

• juice of half a lemon

• teaspoon of white miso paste

• Fork all the ingredients together until they are well blended. Serve with watercress salad or on wholegrain bread
